So you have the hair you have always dreamed of - how do you keep it that way?
So you have taken the plunge and invested in hair extensions to give you that beautiful mane of hair, you have waited so long to have. So how do you keep it looking that way? Read on to find out...
When investing in hair extensions there are a few things to keep in mind:
1. Hair extensions have been heavily processed before they get anywhere near your head so they will need a lot of TLC to keep them looking and feeling soft and shiny, this is especially true if you are a blonde!
2. That old saying you pay for what you get is especially true when it comes to hair extensions. The less you pay the more chance there is that the hair is also lesser in quality and the more you will have to invest in looking after it.
3. Hair extensions do not benefit from the oils your scalp produces like your own hair does so it will need extra attention to keep it moisturised.
So now you know all this what do you need to keep that beautiful mane in tip top condition? Your hair extension toolkit should contain the following:
1. A good salon grade shampoo and conditioner - if you can find it in your local supermarket it is not the shampoo you should be using on your hair extensions! High street shampoos can be very harsh and will strip hair of moisture and with hair extensions this will lead to tangled and hard to manage hair. My personal recommendation is the Wella SP range. It has a shampoo to suit every hair type, my personal favourites being Wella Colour Save for you hair dye addicts and Wella Hydrate for hair that is in need of a little extra moisture (those who like heated styling tools take note!)
2. Argan oil - my personal favourite is the Athena Argan Oil which is made especially for hair extensions. It doesn't weight hair down and is great and keeping hair silky smooth. If you ever do find your extensions get tangled use some organ oil to ease out any knots. You can use Argan Oil on wet hair before you blow-dry it and then on dry hair to tame any frizz and keep hair silky smooth between washes
3. Good hair treatments - use a good hair mask once a week on mid lengths to ends avoiding the bonds of course! Your thirsty hair extensions will thank you!
4. Olaplex - your own hair as well as your hair extensions will be kept healthy by using this miracle product at least once a week. If you can leave it on overnight even better as the longer you can leave it in the hair the better
4. A hair extension brush - a loop brush will stop any of your bonds being snagged potentially causing them to become loose. With a loop brush you can brush through the hair firmly helping to avoid any of that dreaded matting...
It will take some time to adapt to your new head of hair but by following the tips above you will be well on your way to keeping that new head of hair in the same condition as the day it was fitted.
So go on girls swish your new hair down to the shops to pick up your hair extension tool kit!
